Relations between Türkiye and Montenegro

Political Relations

Türkiye recognized Montenegro on 12 June 2006 (the 7th country), and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 3 July 2006.

Türkiye attaches great importance to the peace and stability of the Balkans, and within this context, sees Montenegro as a friendly country that contributes to peace and stability of the region.

Türkiye supports the efforts of Montenegro, whose primary foreign policy objective is integration with the European Union and Euro-Atlantic institutions. Moreover, in close cooperation with Türkiye, Montenegro shows solidarity with our country in regional and international platforms. Montenegro became a NATO member in 2017 with the support of our country.

High level visits and contacts between the two countries continue intensively and successfully.

Upon the invitation of President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic, the first official visit of H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye, to Montenegro on 28 August 2021 has been described as historic.

The President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic paid a working visit to Istanbul on 30 December 2022, upon the invitation of H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye.

Important regulations such as Free Trade Agreement, Economic Cooperation Agreement, Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments signed between the two countries constitute the contractual basis of our economic relations.

The amount of Turkish investments made in Montenegro reached 42 million Euros in 2021, and 55.4 million Euros in the January-September period of 2022. Moreover, Türkiye ranks 6th in the list of countries that make the most foreign direct investments to Montenegro.
